The classic art of Bali is rich in narrative traditions and the Kamasan paintings of the east represent one of the most highly developed representations of Balinese Hindu folklore.
In his recent series of paintings entitled ‘Cross Cultural Collage’, Philip has explored the world of the Kamasan images and style. Through the contemporary eye of an expatriate artist who has made Bali his home, the stories of Kamasan are retold with a western approach to painting.
These multi paneled pieces are in collaboration with a young Kamasan painter, Kadek Sesangka who himself has direct family lineage to the traditional painters in east Bali. This mix of cross cultural backgrounds and approaches to painting have evoked a collection of beautifully exotic paintings rich in luscious surface, steeped in traditional story but ones which are definitely ‘post Warhol’ in context.
This series of art works are painted in acrylic and prada on canvas mounted on hardboard. |
